| Air-Stream Node |

| | content | ] | Well, we had a technest at my house last Sunday.
Had pretty much everything prepared, bread, snags, sauce, softdrink, beer, greenstuff, people, and the wifi tech...
Well not everything went to plan. Lucychili hammered out perfectly cooked snags and other tasty things around luch time. Food was good and folks had a good solid yack about tech, work, local community group stuff, school, study, etc, etc... The social networking bit couldn't have happened better =) But the "node raising" didn't.
Shadey and I spent the better part of three hours on the roof hacking away trying to make it all go. We didn't find the AP on the far end that we were supposed to link to. However we did pick up a couple of other APs around the place, interestingly an Air-Stream node at Passadena.
Thank you to everyone that held ladders, shifted cables, washed dishes, poured drinks, took notes, etc etc =) (George, Paul, Karl ...)
Was a good day all round =) |

| Air-Stream meeting - DNS tech |
[Oct. 27th, 2006|07:30 pm] |
Was extremely tired when I went to the Air-Stream Tech meet this week.
Had the trip to Melbourne to sleep off too!
Anyhow, went to the Tech meet to see what the guys wanted to do with DNS, how they wanted to update it. Currently there is one server that services DNS for all the DNS for the Air-Stream backbone. While the backbone is good, folks still talk about some down time on some key links. They'd like to fix this.
There was some initial discussion, banter and 'what is DNS' ...
I had a few suggestions, at which point I was directed to the white board to explain...
So I drew up a lot of stuff about how the network looks, where users and the servers fit in, where you would want to put the DNS servers and thing luverly thing called redundancy.
My suggestions were mostly focused around making the Air-Stream DNS easy to maintain, make it similar to how things are implemented on the internets and keep members DNS seperate to the officially mantained Air-Stream stuff.
Keep it simple sunshine! Use a root DNS server that points to top level domains and put a half dozen around the network near the main route points, have a primary DNS server that has a WebUI to publish changes, then a buncha client facing secondary DNS servers for members sites.
TODO: I need to draw up some of the diagrams for the folks so they can understand what the discussion was all about. |

| | indifferent | ] | "Sunnyvale (CA) - With the acquisition of ATI, AMD will have all the pieces in place to evolve from a processor manufacturer into a platform company and go head to head with Intel in more markets - especially in the business desktop and notebook segments. But AMD claims that it is approach will be different from Intel and allow third-party firms - such as Nvidia - to access its platforms."
AMD: We won't be another Intel |

| | grumpy | ] | Damn ubuntu and its "lets make you life easy" and only install the grub bootloader on hd0!
Can I select an alternative disk to save to? Hell no!
So now I have to head over, dismantle the damn machine and pull the power from the two PATA disks so I can get Ubuntu to see the SATA disks ... |

More wrangling involving getting the pkgsrc setup and now have bash installed =) Looks like a long slow weekend =)
My Air-Stream membership has finally been processed, so I need to build my node! |

| More NetBSD tinkering |
[Apr. 20th, 2006|07:29 am] |
Now have NetBSD mounting its NFS root file system and friends happily over the network from the raid box =D
Development is a tad on the slow side on this one, but if I can get the other three machines in, should help a bit ;)
Looks like more crap weather today, so no cycling in to work for me! |

Went to see "The Fastest Indian". Amazing move. Dry humour. Tech, ie; motorcycles & cars. Need to see it again.
Had a late lunch with Janet and Nan in a resuturaunt called "Sophis", with the most bizzare proprietor I have ever seen. |

| Easter, long weekend, good excuse for a technest |
[Apr. 14th, 2006|09:03 am] |
Been hacking away to get a some stream ripping type action happening, I also would like to get a shoutcast or icecast type thing happening. Been talking to some local artists about getting content that has a copyright friendly setup for a community internet radio station =)
The MicroVAX 3100 is back up and running, hoping to get the MicroVAX II up this weekend too. Netbooting seems to be the way to go =) |

| Novels, novels, novels... |
[Apr. 13th, 2006|10:58 am] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | tired | ] | Finsihed reading "The case of the dishevelled desk" on the bus on the way home. Picked it up at "Drift" my favourite cafe in town, was on the "readme table" for $5. So that wasn't a hard ask and I'm inspired to write my own short stories at the moment.
Sue lead us astray today at lunch time, as we wandered about Rundle Mall, via Borders, Haighs and Dymocks. Picked up a copy of "The Salmon of Doubt" for Janet, and "The Encyclopedia of Printmaking Techniques". Should be a quiet weekend with a book or two, spot of dog walking, VAX hacking and sleeping.
Need to finish "The Cyptonimicon" first. Been plowing throught that over the last couple of weeks. I have been enjoying it, but too tired to read much at night, been cycling some and not taking the bus to read much... but its the Easter weekend. Should be able to finish it... should. After that I have a half dozen Pratchett novels to catch-up too! |
